As a wedding photographer, one of the questions I hear the most is “How many hours of wedding photography do I need?” While the answer to this question depends on a variety of factors, there are also some general guidelines that can help you determine how much coverage you need for your special day. There’s a lot to consider, the timing of the wedding, the location or how many locations you plan to have, the size of the wedding, and if you have special requests. This may seem a little overwhelming, so I’m here to give you a little help while your planning your big day!

First, think about the size of the wedding. A larger wedding will require more time for the photographer to capture all the important moments. Think of how many people will want to take a picture with you and your new spouse! Also, if you have, for example, larger bridal parties and big families, all of this plays a part in how long it will take to get every photo. So, if you’re having a larger wedding, consider booking more coverage to ensure that no moment is missed!
Second, consider how many locations and activities you will have throughout the day. If you plan to have the ceremony and reception in different locations, the photographer will need to capture both of those events, which will require more time. If you plan to do a first look, have a receiving line, or have an extravagant wedding exit, you should also factor that into your total coverage time.
Third, think about the time of day when the ceremony and reception will be held. Having to wait for the perfect lighting moment is something that can’t be rushed. If you are having a sunset ceremony or a late evening reception, you may want to consider more coverage in order to capture the beautiful lighting of the day.
Finally, consider any special requests you may have. If you want photos of the bridal party getting ready, or you would like a few special photos taken during the reception, you should factor that into your coverage time as well. In general, 8-10 hours of coverage is enough time to capture most weddings. However, if you are having a larger wedding or have special requests, you may want to consider booking more coverage.
Every wedding is unique, so it’s important to talk to your photographer about your specific needs in order to ensure that no moment is missed. As a photographer, meeting your needs on YOUR day is priority one. So talking everything out and making sure you know what’s important to you is a must! And if you have questions, just ask!
